"Pin Down Girl: The Story Of Ethel Brown" Overview
Pin Down Girl: The Story Of Ethel Brown', is the story of a young woman who left poverty behind, became a lady, and lived an alternative lifestyle by becoming a female wrestler from 1950 to 1955. This was most unusual in the era after WWII when women were expected to stay in the home, raise families and be proper ladies.
Young Ethel Brown was working at an A&P to support herself and her daughter while living at her mother's home after a failed marriage. Ethel and a co-worker girlfriend attended the wrestling matches at the local arena in Columbus, Ohio as a weekly evening of entertainment. It was at the matches that Ethel found opportunity when a local sportswriter set her up to meet Billy Wolfe, the well known female wrestling manager in Columbus.
Ethel recounts her days traveling, her friendships, her romantic involvements, her injuries and how the influence of other wrestlers helped polish her. Ethel felt strong and beautiful during this period of wrestling in her early twenties.
Billy Wolfe and Ethel maintained a positive relationship until the match that ended her career. Ethel learned she would stand on principle when it came to the inequities that came with being a female wrestler.
When we do meet Ethel in the film, we see she is an average woman, but one who lived and learned outside the lines of 'normal' for at least a portion of her life. Her story is more than her wrestling past but of making choices, learning from experience and being self-reliant.
