"The Middle Of The Middle" Overview

The Middle of the Middle is a withering reproach to modern love told through the eyes of the disaffected and self-possessed youth of the Hollywood scene. The characters that inhabit the film's urban landscape lend a mirror to the reality, where the pimps and the whores more likely own a Mercedes and a house in the Hills. Emphasizing the urban blight of modern Los Angeles, the film finds a melancholy beauty in the innocence of youthful love that turns upon itself as all love eventually does.

This character piece drives a quiet intensity that builds as The Girl (Hannah Johnson) stumbles into the cracks of Hollywood that lie between the glamor and the street. She sleeps with men for money, confusing the material world of comfort and safety for emotion and human connection. In her disconnection from the world, The Girl seeks truth and true love, but cannot see past her own deceptions.

The Hustler (Joshua Collins), driven by his fascination and longing for the ugly caricature of fashion and wealth splashed on every inch of space in America. Jake (John Allen Phillips), the embodiment of male youth and vitality, his desire to self-destruct, much as The Girl, belies the truth of his physical form. Always hungry for a little more than the little they have, Jake and The Girl dream of a halcyon life while only moving the inches needed to preserve another day of escape.

Aimlessly adrift in an ocean of steel and concrete, with the constant draw of a horizon that doesn't exist and a sunset drive where the seats are just so, Jake and The Girl draw themselves deeper into a world where a thirty dollar score becomes a meaningful thing. Innocently pining for true love, The Girl's lonely path crosses that of The Gentleman in the Hollywood Hills. In their loneliness and their childlike desire for connection, they push towards an end without hope.

In all, these tragic characters paint a stark portrait of the world underneath the red carpets, the flashing lights and the photo shoots. In the dark places of a city built on hollow facades, The Middle of the Middle's cinematic, yet stark portrayal of love in the Hollywood scene struts boldly through the alleys and the gutters, quietly raw.
